About Me
I am Dr. Thangavel Vijayalakshmi, currently serving as a Visiting Professor of Tamil Studies at the University of Houston under the auspices of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, India. As an inspiring teacher, academic writer, theorist, folklorist, poet, storyteller, translator, orator, women’s empowerment trainer, dubbing artist, and above all, a compassionate human being, I am dedicated to promoting Tamil culture and knowledge. Presently, I am offering Tamil Culture courses to students at UH.
In addition to my regular M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Tamil Literature, I hold a Master’s degree in English Literature and a Bachelor’s degree in Law. Over the course of my career, I have published extensively, with 27 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 27 chapters in books, 9 authored books, 15 edited books, and 4 translated works. I have actively participated in 90 national and 21 international seminars, presenting papers and contributing to academic discourse. Additionally, I have organized 22 academic events, supervised 13 M.Phil. students, and guided 10 scholars to earn their Ph.D. degrees. Recognizing my expertise in curriculum and syllabus design, five universities have appointed me to their board of studies, and I have held roles as chairperson, convener, and member in over 40 academic bodies.
Among my significant accomplishments, I have propounded a “Tamil literary theory,” developed a unique “approach to feminist theory,” and compiled a comprehensive 1,700-page “Tamil-Malayalam dictionary,” all of which are regarded as pioneering milestones in their respective fields. In addition to these academic achievements, I have served as the Director of Student Services at the University of Kerala for four years and as Head of the Department for three years, with my contributions to the Senate being widely recognized and appreciated.

Hi, I’m Dr. T. Vijayalakshmi, a professor, researcher, and storyteller passionate about bridging cultures, exploring literature, and empowering communities. Let me take you through the milestones, dreams, and endeavors that have shaped my life.
Where It All Began
I was born on May 14, 1971, and grew up immersed in the beauty of Tamil culture and language. Early on, I realized the transformative power of literature and how it could connect people, preserve traditions, and spark change. This realization set me on a path of academic exploration and cultural preservation that I continue to walk today.
Academic Excellence
My journey in academics has been both enriching and challenging. After earning a Ph.D. from the University of Kerala in 2001, with a thesis on the folk medicines and practices of Palakkad’s tribes, I realized the importance of preserving tribal knowledge and traditions.

Bridging Tamil and Malayalam
One of my most fulfilling projects has been the Tamil-Malayalam Dictionary, a labor of love that took eight years to complete. This work is more than just a dictionary; it’s a bridge connecting two rich linguistic heritages. Through this and other projects, I’ve aimed to foster understanding and collaboration between Tamil and Malayalam-speaking communities.
I also developed the Tamil Literary Theory and introduced a Feministic Research Approach, offering new ways to analyze literature through the lens of culture and identity.
Experience at the University of Houston
As a visiting professor at the University of Houston and the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies, I had the privilege of fostering cross-cultural understanding through teaching courses on Indian culture, literature, and philosophy. Beyond academics, I actively engaged in cultural exchange initiatives, promoting Indian heritage while bridging intellectual and cultural gaps, reinforcing my commitment to global connections through education and diplomacy.

Beyond teaching, my work in Modern Literary Theory has introduced fresh perspectives, including the Tamil Literary Theory and a Feministic Research Approach, which explore texts through cultural and societal lenses.
Championing Cultural Heritage
I am deeply invested in preserving folklore and tribal traditions. Through my research on the tribes of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, I’ve documented medicinal practices, oral traditions, and cultural nuances that are often overlooked. My efforts in lexicography, including the compilation of the Tamil-Malayalam Dictionary, further reflect my commitment to preserving and celebrating linguistic heritage.
Translation has been another rewarding journey, enabling me to connect Tamil and Malayalam literary works with wider audiences. Works like Odiyan and Thakazhi Sivasankaran Pillai highlight shared cultural narratives and promote a sense of unity through language.
Empowering Women and Future Scholars
Women’s empowerment has always been a central theme in my work. Through my academic contributions, lectures, and books, I aim to amplify women’s voices and foster discussions on gender equality. Mentoring the next generation of scholars is equally fulfilling, as I guide them in embracing critical thinking and contributing meaningfully to society.
As the first ICCR Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Houston, I’ve also had the privilege of promoting Indian literature, particularly Tamil, on a global stage. This role has deepened my belief in the value of cultural exchange and the universality of stories.

Exploring Tribal Lore and Medicine
My research has delved deeply into the lives and practices of tribal communities, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The study of Irula Tribal Medicine highlighted the community’s reliance on natural remedies and their profound understanding of herbal medicine. Similarly, my work on the Iravalla Tribal Culture documented their oral traditions, customs, and lifestyle, preserving their unique heritage for future generations.
Folk Medicine and Practices
As part of my Ph.D., I conducted an extensive study on Folk Medicines and Practices of Tribes in Palakkad District. This research explored the medicinal practices rooted in indigenous knowledge systems, emphasizing their cultural significance and relevance to modern healthcare.
Folklore and Feministic Studies
My M.Phil. research focused on the Folklore of Iravalan Tribes, shedding light on their oral traditions and cultural narratives. Additionally, my academic contributions include the development of a Feministic Research Approach, providing a fresh perspective to analyze literature through the lens of gender and empowerment.
Lexicography and Linguistic Research
I led the compilation of the Tamil-Malayalam Dictionary, a monumental linguistic project that bridges two rich languages. This work is not only a resource for translation and study but also a symbol of cultural unity between Tamil and Malayalam-speaking communities.

In addition, I have delivered invited talks and keynote speeches at over 25 conferences and workshops, sharing insights on Tamil literature, feminist theory, and cultural preservation.
Teaching and Mentorship
For over two decades, I’ve had the privilege of teaching and mentoring students at the University of Kerala and beyond. Guiding 10 Ph.D. scholars and 13 M.Phil. students has been a rewarding experience, as I believe in nurturing not just knowledge but also critical thinking and compassion.
My teaching philosophy revolves around connecting the classroom to the real world, encouraging students to see the broader implications of their learning.
